York win promotion to end National League exile

National North Play-Off Final

York City 2-0 Boston United

York City finally returned to the National League after a five-year exile after seeing off Boston United in front of a packed LNER Community Stadium.

Goals right at the start and end from Lenell John-Lewis and Maziar Kouhyar propelled York into the top flight of Non League Football.

Winning promotion is an unbelievable achievement for York, who were in no man’s land when John Askey replaced Steve Watson midway through the campaign.

An unbeaten run towards the end of the league games and that carried momentum which has led them to glory.

The in-form John-Lewis settled the nerves in the fifth minute.

The forward latched onto Scott Barrow’s long throw and buried the ball into the bottom corner.

Experienced striker Clayton Donaldson hit the crossbar as York searched for the second goal before half-time.

They had to wait until the final four minutes to seal it.

Kouhyar did the honours by driving into the penalty area on the right-wing before unleashing a goal-bound shot.
