Frickley trip brings back happy memories for Garforth boss

Garforth Town’s short journey trip to Frickley Athletic tonight will bring back lots of happy memories for Paul Marshall and his family.

Marshall’s brother Sean is one of Frickley’s greatest ever managers having guided them to second in the National League back in 1986.

“It is (a nice occasion for the family) because Sean was very successful there,” Marshall told Non League Yorkshire.

“It was a very nice place in the 1980s for him.

“He got a good group of lads together who were brilliant.

“They finished second in the National League.

“They were £25 a player at the time and they had some brilliant players like Russ Wilcox.

“I was at Harrogate Town at the time and I used to go and watch when I could and Sean used to pick me up and take me to train during pre-season.

“I remember running up and down the slag heaps and being sick!”

Marshall’s hidden gems policy is already reaping rewards two games into the season as the line-ups contained unfamiliar names.

“There’s some more to come,” he said.

“Dexter Ball is going to be a good player.

“Woodsy (Liam Woods) has come from Leeds Beckett, Steve Waide sent me him, Tom Evans and a few more.

“They came down to train and they fitted into the group straightaway.”
