Scarborough Athletic took advantage of their rivals’ week off by winning 3-2 at Burscough to go fourth in the Evo Stik Division One North.

Scarborough were cruising at one point before Burscough pegged them back. Bryan Hughes and Paul Foot’s men had to hang on towards the end as Jimmy Ghaichem was controversially sent off.

A Burscough error allowed new striker Tom Corner to put Scarborough in front after ten minutes.

Corner scored again on the half-hour mark when he turned home Matty Plummer’s cross from the right.

A brilliant Paul Williams free kick brought Burscough back into it before Ghaichem restored Scarborough’s two goal lead.

Burscough defender Nick Ryan reduced the deficit and Scarborough had to hold on for the final 30 minutes of the second half to take home the points.

The position was put under threat in the closing stages when Ghaichem was bizarrely given a second yellow card by referee Nathaniel Cox for taking a free kick too quickly.

Scarborough Athletic: Cracknell, Plummer, Robson, Middleton, Wilkinson, McCaffrey, Ghaichem, Davidson, Corner, Bradshaw (captain), Metcalfe. Subs: Ridley, Blott, Bennett, Hughes, Foot.
