Brian Cusworth hit the winner for Maltby Main late-on

Maltby Main knocked & Hallamshire Senior Cup holders Athersley Recreation out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup after a five goal thriller at Muglet Lane.

Brian Cusworth was once again the hero with a late goal to secure a 3-2 victory and a semi-final tie with Nostell Miners Welfare.

Maltby led 2-0 at one point, but Athersley refused to surrender the trophy without a fight and levelled the scores in a tension-filled game.

The home started strong with Louis Penty scoring after ten minutes.

Penty then added his and Maltby’s second by capitalising on a mix-up between Ryan Blackburn and Shaun Penn.

Penty came to close to completing his hat-trick before Athersley’s captain Ryan White pulled his team back from the cliff edge with strike from 20 yards.

It was all to play for on the hour as Kieran Scargill blasted Athersley level from the penalty spot.

Maltby, who had several players yellow carded, then had coach Ian Dring sent to the stands after showing dissent to the referee.

But, that distraction failed to stop Maltby and Cusworth stepped up to the mark for the second time in five days by scoring the winner to put his side on the brink of Hillsborough.
