A late goal denied Stocksbridge Park Steels an impressive win in the 1-1 draw at high-flying Evo Stik Division One South side Spalding United.

It was a good point still though for the Steels considering that a traffic jam on the A1 caused Chris Hilton’s men to be late.

The result leaves Spalding needing two wins out of two in their bid to secure a play-offs place.

Stocksbridge led for a long period of time as Ryan Laight put them ahead on the half-hour mark after a stint of pressure.

Kler Heh had been denied before Harrison Biggins’ corner was met by the head of Laight, who scored.

Spalding would have fallen out of the top five if they had lost so they had to go for broke in the second half.

Steels goalkeeper Sam Andrew kept his nerve by saving a Tom Walmsley header early on.

But, under intense pressure, Andrew could not stop Matt Nolan’s header from finding the net.

Stocksbridge Park Steels: Andrew, Lever, Coleman, Haigh, Cardwell, Laight, Biggins, Stirrup, Garside (captain), Heh. Subs: Thompson, McFadyen, Critchlow, Wright, Scully.
