Billy Miller has swooped to sign Garforth Town striker Nick Black with ten days to go until the start of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division season.

The former Bardsey forward featured as a second half substitute in the 3-1 defeat to Harrogate Town last night and has signed forms with the club.

Black, who has been on holiday for a lot of pre-season, has only trained once this summer though.

That was with Garforth, the club he has served with distinction for the past two seasons.

Miller admits that he needs to get him fit for the season, but says he is delighted to sign him.

“We’ve always said that when good players become available in this league then we’re always interested,” said Miller, who also described him as a “lovely lad” who plays with a “smile on his face”.

“Nick will be bring competition to the forward line.

He came in tonight and I was quite impressed with his movement.

“His first touch was good and he went out and got involved straightaway.”

Miller has also admitted that he is still undecided on who will be his first choice goalkeeper for the opening day home game with Maltby Main.

Gary Stevens and Pete Lawrie have received rave reviews during the pre-season matches.

Asked if a decision has been made, Miller said: “No I haven’t and I think it would be unfair to at this stage.

“Gary has played in the majority of the games so at this time he looks like the favourite to start in goal.

“Pete does his bit when he comes on and every time he comes on, he never lets us down.

“Gary plays again on Saturday as Pete is not here and that’s our last pre-season game.

“At this moment you would fancy Gary to start the season, but ten days is a long time in football.”
