Ossett Town created a five point gap between them and second bottom Harrogate Railway after victory at the league’s whipping boys.

With New Mills only having one point to their name, it would have been a disaster if Ossett had come away anything less than a win.

Nerves were eased within 15 minutes as centre-back Simon Rogers rose perfectly to head home David Brown’s superb cross.

There was a minor scare for Ossett as goalkeeper Chris Backhouse was forced to palm a goal-bound effort onto his post.

Fortunately Ossett were able to put New Mills to bed early on in the second half. Brown was again involved after taking on a defender. He found Steve Ridley, who supplied Alex Peterson with a straight-forward goal.

Ossett Town: Backhouse, Hawksworth, L Schofield, Monfredi (Phillis 59), Wood (captain), Rogers, Farnhill, Ridley (Siddall 87), Peterson, Fearon, Brown (J Schofield 70). Subs unused: Kilner, Quinlan.
