Holmes sets sights on FA Cup place

Darren Holmes admits that the season is far from over for Glasshoughton Welfare as he and Lee Vigars want to secure an Emirates FA Cup place.

Glasshoughton have enjoyed an excellent first campaign under Holmes and Vigars. Currently they are locked in a battle to finish in the top ten – usually the threshold for an FA Cup spot – with several other teams, including Selby Town, Eccleshill United and Winterton Rangers.

“The FA Cup is the big one from a revenue point of view so we’re trying to finish as high as we can so have a chance of getting into it for next season,” Holmes said.

“We keep saying to the lads that it is really important that we finish the season well because although we can’t get in the play-offs, we’re playing for FA Cup places.

“We have done really well this season. The club struggled to a certain extent last season and finished with 37 points, whereas we had more-or-less done that by Christmas this year.

“I think we have surprised a lot of people. We have a good squad, most of the lads have been with us since pre-season. They are a good set and that has been our strength this year.

“We’ve had our blips, three or four games where we could have done better, but on the whole we’ve been in eighth, ninth, tenth so we have definitely played our football in the top half.”

Holmes was speaking on the monthly Non League Show on BBC Radio Leeds. Holmes was a guest alongside commercial manager Garry Willis, Silsden manager Danny Forrest and Non League Yorkshire’s James Grayson. Dave Fletcher presented the show.
