Upbeat Garforth up to second place

Toolstation NCEL Premier Division

Garforth Town 2-0 Penistone Church

Calum Ward scored the opener for Garforth Town after a game of pinball

Goals from Calum Ward and Lee Turner moved upbeat Garforth Town up to the dizzy heights of second place.

Workmanlike Garforth fully deserved their second consecutive victory – one that clearly gives the belief that the Miners can enjoy their best season since the great days under Steve Nichol at the turn of the decade.

Penistone were clearly not themselves again. The squash-buckling style of play that Ian Richards, the best young manager in the NCEL, has developed was missing.

Church created little over the 90 minutes and were punished.

Garforth worked their socks off and were rewarded for the first time on 35 minutes. It will be an interesting goal to watch on the highlights as it literally came from a game of pinball in the Church penalty box. Ward claimed the final touch.

The decisive second goal came in the early stages of the second half. Ward’s direct free kick hit the wall, but the ball found the right man in Garforth’s captain marvel James Beaston. His vision was magnificent as he flighted a superb ball towards the far post for Turner to score his fourth goal in two games. It was Beaston though who grabbed the plaudits.

Church caused brief problems without really hurting Garforth, whose victory was greeted by a big cheers from their supporters.

The other bonus for Garforth fans was the return of Liam Ormsby as a second half substitute.
