Striker Walton scores two and saves penalty in shootout

Liversedge striker Joe Walton

Striker and makeshift goalkeeper Joe Walton scored twice and made an important save in the penalty shootout as Liversedge won at Barton Town in the Toolstation NCEL League Cup second round after a 4-4 draw in normal time.

The in-form forward struck early on as he cancelled out Ben Hinchliffe’s opener for manager-less Barton, who let Dave Ricardo leave at the weekend.

The same Barton player scored a penalty before half-time and the home side held that lead until ten minutes into the second half.

Walton, again, this time lobbing the Barton stopper.

‘Sedge soon took the lead with Matty Plummer turning the ball into his own net.

It looked all when Ollie Fearon fortuitously made it 4-2. However, Tom Waudby and Reece Moody hit back for Barton to force penalties.

Walton, now in goal because of an injury, saved Barton’s first spot kick and ‘Sedge eventually won  4-2 after the home side’s final effort flew over the crossbar.
