Wayne Benn praised his Hemsworth Miners Welfare for their second half response in the 5-2 defeat to Shaw Lane Aquaforce.
Toolstation NCEL Division One side Hemsworth were staring down the barrel of a possible heavy defeat after going into the break 4-0 down.
Benn managed to bring out an improved team effort from his players for the second half and it produced two goals from Nick Guest and Darcey Pugh.
“I said at half-time: ‘look, listen, let’s try and win this second half and show a bit of spirit, work harder and be a little tighter to people’,” said Benn, who is enjoying his second spell as manager of Hemsworth after returning last October.
“I think to the letter they did exactly what I asked of them because we won the second half 2-1.
“When you’re losing 4-0 at half-time you’re worried it can turn to six, seven or eight. Credit to them, they stuck to the task and worked hard.
“The thing with us is that we’re a very young side and at times when things aren’t going our way, we lose our shape and way.
“I’m pleased. I’m disappointed with two or three of the goals in the first half, but I’m very pleased with the second half with some of the commitment and play.”
A 23rd minute penalty from new Shaw Lane striker Lee Morris opened the floodgates.
Morris scored again along with Shane Kelsey and George Conway and Benn added that heads dropped.
“We started the game pretty well and for the first 15 minutes it was pretty even,” he said.
“Obviously they are quite experienced and have a bigger wage bill and they’ve strengthened really well so we knew it was going to be a really tough game.
“Up until the first goal we matched them and played some decent stuff without causing them too many problems.
“I was a bit disappointed with our reaction after conceding the first goal from the penalty. I thought we went into our shell and started to stand off people which created big gaps between people.
“They have players who can hurt you if you stand off them.”
