Stocksbridge Park Steels assistant manager Mark Wilson refused to defend his players after the disastrous 3-0 pre-season defeat at lower league Handsworth Parramore yesterday.
Wilson held the reins with Shaun Handisides for the game as Chris Hilton was unavailable due to his attendance at a wedding.
The afternoon was an afternoon to forget for the Steels who failed to have a shot at goal in anger against a young Handsworth side.
Stocksbridge even had to play with ten men for the last 20 minutes as midfielder James Knowles was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Wilson told Non League Yorkshire: “It was a very below par performance.
“We were out-played, out-witted. They had more desire, they worked harder.
“It was not the type of performance I am used to.
“I’m very disappointed, but I wouldn’t say we threw in the towel (in the last 25 minutes) as we obviously we had a player sent off for a silly challenge which I can’t defend.
“But the whole performance from the start to the finish just wasn’t acceptable.
“Personally for myself, I took charge with Shaun and I expected more.”
Steels have just under two weeks to put things right before the Evo Stik Division One South campaign starts at Norton United.
The Steels will visit Hilton’s old club Worsbrough on Wednesday night and Wilson is looking for his team to make amends.
“We will be training on Tuesday and we have a match on Wednesday and we’re looking for a 100% better performance,” he added.
“It’s all about growing and learning. We have a lot of youngsters who will have to look at their performance they have put in and they need to raise their game if they want to progress and play for Stocksbridge.”
