Athersley Recreation have made an excellent start to their pre-season campaign by signing four proven Toolstation Northern Counties East League players.

Arriving at the Barnsley-based club are attackers Adam Podmore and Chris White along with defender Andy McManus and versatile player Mick Jones.

Podmore is best known for spell at Worsbrough, just like White, who finished last season at Shaw Lane Aquaforce.

Andy McManus at has played at both Ossett clubs, while veteran Jones is from Parkgate, but has previously for Athersley.

All four clearly strengthen Athersley, who are hoping to enjoy a more successful Toolstation NCEL Premier Division campaign this time around.

Last season started brightly, but tailed off towards the end.

Athersley have also confirmed that Scott Alcock, Macauley Shilitto, Kieran Scargill and Sean Penn have signed NCEL forms.

New Athersley chief Jason Dodsworth said: “Really happy with pre season two weeks in and the lads are really pushing themselves in the sessions.

“I can only see a big improvement this season from us.”

Athersley kick off their pre-season friendlies schedule with a home game against Ossett Albion next Saturday.
