League heroes Maltby Main set up a money-spinning Emirates FA Cup first qualifying round tie with Frickley Athletic after a shock 2-1 victory at 1874 Northwich.

Spencer Fearn and Mark Askwith’s men raced into a 2-0 lead at their stunned North West Counties hosts and held on.

The Toolstation NCEL Premier Division side had been piling on the pressure for some time when Nicky Darker was able to fire home the opener.

Maltby captain Hayden Barnett made an important block at the start of the second half and his team soon rewarded him with the second goal.

Ben Thornton capitalised on poor defending and scored with a low drive.

Sensing their departure from the competition was close, Northwich threw the proverbial kitchen sink.

Goalkeeper Jamie Bailey and Barnett made notable blocks as Northwich desperately searched for a goal. Even then Maltby still looked capable of scoring as their veteran talisman Brian Cusworth nearly killed the home side off.

A Michael Brandon goal gave Maltby a jittery finish, but the Rotherham-based saw the game out to earn their club some further prize money.

Maltby Main: Bailey, Austin, Fawcus, Nodder, Barnett (captain), Hemmingway, Outram, Darker, Cusworth, Thornton, Yousef. Subs: Lovell, Gibson, Poole, Swales, Stancliffe.
Referee: Andrew Cawtherley
Attendance: 260
