Guiseley’s first home game of the season ended in defeat with Wrexham scoring in the last minute.

Guiseley took the lead early on when striker Michael Rankine hit an unstoppable free-kick from 25 yards out, that left Wrexham keeper Chris Dunn with no chance.

The hosts were soon pegged back though when referee Joe Johnson gave a penalty to Wrexham for an adjudged handball, John Rooney took it and scored from the spot.

The away side nearly took the lead when Shaun Harrad’s curled effort required a fingertip save from Dan Atkinson and the ball also hit the underside of the bar as well.

The second half started with not many chances but substitute Gerry McDonagh’s introduction gave the visitors another option and he headed in a cross to give the Welsh side the lead.

Guiseley tried to get back level and good work by Jordan Preston found Adam Smith in the area, but his header went wide.

There was late drama and Javan Vidal who impressed during the match got an assist when his cross found Jake Lawlor at the back post and he was in the right place to slot the ball home.

But with a minute to go Paul Rutherford cut inside and from 20 yards curled a fine effort in, which caused heartbreak for the Lions.
