Mike Hewitt’s late equaliser earned relegation threatened Westella a priceless point at Campion.

Westella started the brightest of the two sides on a very heavy pitch in windy conditions. Danny Walker, Alex Wood and Mike Pecora causing the home defence problems from the off showed the intent that Westella weren’t going to let the home side have an easy afternoon.

Harry Earl and Chris Short returned to the side and both caused problems playing some neat through balls for Walker and Wood to register early chances on goal.

Campion grew in to the first half with some neat play that saw some resolute defending from the Westella back four, the hosts only real danger was long distance efforts that flew high and wide of the Westella goal.

As the wind picked up and the rain continued to fall the game soon became very open. The hosts gained a corner which was cleared 20 yards out, Jacob Buchanan hitting a thunderous shot that flew into the top corner just before the break.

Westella hit back from the restart, Andy Jackson played an inch perfect ball to Wood who sneaked in behind his marker and rifled a low effort inches wide of the post on the half time whistle.

The second half was a scrappy affair. Campion FC pushed for a second goal but could not break their way through as captain Matt Fyvie and Sam McLaughlin made sure second top goal scorer in the NCEL division one Eli Hey was marked closely out of the game.

Westella continued to be counted for gaining possession time and time again and was only a matter of time before they drew level.

Walker hitting the side netting was then followed up by Zak Oakshott hitting the cross bar with a header.

With five minutes remaining a blocked effort in the home goal mouth saw the ball fall to returning full back Hewitt who showed composure in front of goal to fire home the equaliser.

What They Said

Westella & Willerby manager Leon Sewell

“Today’s performance and result was much needed but it also goes to show we are a good side that will not stop working hard for the club and one another as we strive to move out of the bottom two.

”The lads where fantastic on a heavy pitch and to come away with a point is good but what impressed me the most was the fact the lads where disappointed not to get all three points.

”If both sides had their shooting boots on it could of been an absolute goal feast. Credit to Campion though, they’ve come into the league and done great and haven’t been out of the top ten all season and for us to travel 90 minutes and stop the loosing streak is fantastic.”
