Destiny is in our own hands – Sewell

Westella & Willerby manager Leon Sewell

Westella & Willerby have their destiny in their own hands, admits Leon Sewell.

The Division One relegation candidates face Worsbrough Bridge at home tomorrow before two upcoming clashes with basement side Nostell Miners Welfare.

The crunch battles with their relegation rivals are likely to have a bearing on the final reckoning for Westella and Sewell told Non League Yorkshire: “We’re positive and we have to keep going and I’ve told the lads that we have to dig deep.

“We have to take that view (that destiny is in our own hands) and it is probably a view that Nostell and Worsbrough will take themselves.

“It is a three horse battle at the end of the day. We have not written Nostell off and we are certainly not writing Worsbrough off and we’re going to do whatever it takes to come out on the right side of it.

“Barring Hallam, we have played all the top sides which is a bit of a relief. We have to remain positive.

“The message to the players for Saturday is don’t lose the game first and foremost. If we apply ourselves like we did in the second half against Pontefract then there is no reason why we can’t get something out of Saturday’s game.”

Sewell has also praised his fantastic goalkeeper Lewis Exall, who signed for Westella at the start of the season and has since won a lot of plaudits.

“I’m quite fortunate that I have one of the best goalkeepers in the league,” he said.

“He’s probably one of the most consistent players in the league and he’s kept us in a lot of games.

“He’s an integral part of the squad. A few teams have been in for him, but he’s turned them down and stuck with the club.

“He says he’s not going anywhere which for me is positive on the basis that we have lost a few players who have gone to earn some pennies.”

Westella head into their clash with Worsbrough on the back of the 3-1 defeat to Pontefract Collieries.

Three first half goals were enough for Ponte and Sewell added: “The damage was done in the first half and it was a very similar game to when we played Ponte earlier in the season.

“We went three-nil down there and it ended the same result as Wednesday night.

“When you come up against an experienced back four like Paz (Craig Parry) and Rousey (Craig Rouse) have put together, it is very hard.

“It was a non-event for us. We have to concentrate on the games that are against teams in-and-around us and hopefully pick some points.”
