McCarthy earns replay for Hallam

FA Vase

Hallam 1-1 Abbey Hey

New Hallam defender Jack McCarthy

Former Garforth Town defender Jack McCarthy earned an FA Vase replay in Manchester on Tuesday by scoring the equaliser in the draw with Abbey Hey at Sandygate.

The visitors took an early lead when Hallam failed to clear their lines and Adam Farrand scored with a low shot from the edge of the box.The home came more into the game as the half wore on and Danny State headed against the crossbar and the visitors keeper saved from Gareth Griffiths and Mitchell Dunne.

In the second half Hallam finally drew level late on when McCarthy grabbed his first goal for the club after the visitors had failed to clear a free kick from James Reed.

In extra time it could have gone either way as sub Matthew Morton missed Hallam’s best chance and the home side had a late scare when Andrew Smith’s header bounced away off the crossbar in the last minute.

The eventual winners will be away to Rossington Main in the next round.
