Wilshire hits two in big Welfare victory

Glasshoughton Welfare 4-1 East Yorkshire Carnegie

Two second half goals from in-form youngster Mitch Wilshire helped Glasshoughton Welfare record one of their easiest wins of the season.

Glasshoughton were dominant throughout their victory over a poor East Yorkshire Carnegie side, who offered little in the 90 minutes.

First half goals from Andy Horbury and Adam Walsh set Glasshoughton on their way to victory. Carnegie’s consolation was a late Jordan Harrison penalty.

Although Glasshoughton cantered to the three points in the end, the first half hour of the clash had little to report on.

But even with the showman Ryan Poskitt drinking cups of tea in the stand because of a four-match suspension, Glasshoughton looked strong and seemed the most likely to score first.

The breakthrough came via Horbury. The striker burst through the middle and his first touch was notably excellent as he gave him enough time and space to slot the ball past Carnegie goalkeeper Lewis Hill.

The one downside towards half-time was serial-offender Gaz Hunter’s yellow card for handball. The midfield general must have been day-dreaming about playing for the England Table Tennis team as he batted the ball away with his hand like a top ping-pong player.

Welfare continued to press for the second goal. Connor Rollinson was inches away with a chance before Walsh jumped like an American Basketball pro to powerfully head home the crucial second goal.

The home side blew their visitors with two quick-fire goals from Wilshire straight after half-time.

Alex Marsh’s great vision from his right-back slot saw him launch a fine long ball up towards Wilshire. The former Worsbrough attacker was initially denied by Hill, but he latched onto the rebound to score the third goal.

Tom Carr set up the fourth with a flick-on which sent Wilshire scuttling away like a greyhound and he was able to lob Hill from distance.

Glasshoughton arguably should have pressed for further goals, but because of the withdrawal of key players, it meant the game petered out.

A wild lunge by Walsh which led to Harrison scoring a penalty was the only black mark on an almost perfect night.

After an inconsistent start, it is looking much better for Glasshoughton, who have now picked up 18 points out of a possible 33 from their last 11 games.

Mr Smith recovered from a poor start – when he appeared to have awarded a penalty, when he had actually given a goal kick – to give an average display overall. If Mr Smith talks more to players then the NCEL will have an excellent official on their hands. In this particular game he was far too quiet.

Apart from the moment of madness with the yellow card, he was excellent in midfield and helped them control proceedings. Gareth’s family and friends will be extremely proud of him today after such a fine display for the Castleford-based club.
