Christian Fox’s Selby Town started as they mean to go on with an impressive attacking display to defeat Evo Stik new-boys Pickering Town.

The Toolstation NCEL Division One promotion hopefuls had to come from behind, but they delivered a swash-buckling performance, a trait synonymous with Fox’s reign, to win.

Carl Stewart, Liam Flanagan, Sam Cable and magic man Joe Dale got the goals.

Eddy Birch gave Pickering, who had a few players missing, the lead after just four minutes.

Stewart, playing against one of his former clubs, sublimely lobbed the Pickering goalkeeper from the distance to level.

Selby had to be patient and they gained the lead midway through the second half thanks to Flanagan’s penalty.

Joy to watch Dale got his name on the score-sheet soon after with a fine finish.

Birch would reduce the deficit and give Pickering hope of an equaliser before Selby killed off their visitors with a strong attacking play.

The Pikes found themselves under siege inside their penalty area and for a moment it looked like the chance was gone. Flanagan hit the post in unlikely circumstances before Dale turned the screw. He passed to perennial hero Cable, who forever goes into Selby folklore as the man who ended six years of sheer torment with his goals to fire the club back into the FA Cup, to finish.
