Welfare end pre-season with win

Key man Tom Carr (left) missed a penalty in Glasshoughton’s 2-1 win over Altofts

Glasshoughton Welfare concluded their pre-season programme last night with a 2-1 win over West Yorkshire League third tier side Altofts at Leeds Road.

Welfare were the dominant side for the majority of the game but were shocked when a speculative effort from distance by Jake Irvine gave the visitors the lead just before half-time.

Welfare upped their game after the break but were thwarted time and again by visiting debutant goalkeeper Nick Downwood. The busy keeper also saved penalty kicks from Tom Carr and Gracyan Klimczak.

Welfare won the game in the last five minutes when two clinical strikes from Klimczak finally beat Downwood.

Glasshoughton Welfare squad: Zaniewski. Horn, Morley, Walsh, Pashley, Hunter, Bowman, Ferguson, Dyson, Horbury, Howley, Carr, Sokol, Klimczak, Knight.
