Barnsley College students Lewis O’Connor, Alfred Thompson, Cole Barrett featured in Worsbrough Bridge’s League Cup defeat at Ollerton Town

Three Barnsley College Sports Academy students made their debut for Worsbrough Bridge in the Toolstation NCEL League Cup defeat at Ollerton Town on Wednesday night.

Lewis O’Connor, Alfred Thompson, Cole Barrett were involved in the fixture – the first milestone of the partnership between the College and Worsbrough.

The agreement could open doors for College students who are looking to get a foothold in football.

Students from the academy will have the opportunity to play showcase games, enjoy a match day experience and coaching sessions from first team staff at Worsbrough.

Students will also have the chance to gain relevant experience in match analysis, sports therapy, strength and conditioning, coaching, sports journalism and media opportunities with Worsbrough.

Luke Forgione, a former Worsbrough player during Chris Hilton’s reign and the Sports Performance and Athlete Development Coordinator at Barnsley College, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for male footballers of the College.

“This is where it all started for me, in the Non League system when I was 19. It’s a great club and is well known in the local area for giving youth an opportunity to progress. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership.”

Young Worsbrough star Calan Rollinson, along with his brother Connor, are two of many Worsbrough players who are ex-Barnsley College students

Worsbrough is well known for giving youth a chance. Current players Calan Rollinson and Liam Owen are ex-Barnsley College students.

Worsbrough chairman Peter Schofield said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Barnsley College. The College is well known for its education and football pedigree. We look forward to working in partnership.”

Forgione is also running a similar partnership with Stocksbridge Park Steels, who managed by old mentor Hilton.

The former midfielder is attending Saturday’s home clash with Wisbech Town and the College will be providing the Steels players with GPS vests and match analysis.
