Super-sub Jonathon Margetts’ sensational last gasp lob ensured a winning start for new Tadcaster Albion manager Curtis Woodhouse.

The former Boston United striker only signed for Tad on the eve of the new BetVictor North West season and he was the difference in the home 2-1 win over Trafford.

Trafford took an early lead from a Jordan Johnson free kick – only for it to be cancelled out quite quickly by new Tadcaster hero Jake Day whose close range header made sure his competitive debut was a success.

1-1 is how it remained for a long time until Margetts spotted Trafford’s goalkeeper Matthew Cooper off-his-line and went for the audacious lob (see bottom of page) from 30 yards – a goal of the season contender in the first game.

A cool finish from Joe Lumsden placed Pontefract Collieries straight after half-time, but Runcorn Linnets secured a point after former Fleetwood Town striker Jamie Rainford finished off a counter-attack.

Both Ossett United and Brighouse Town were held to goal-less draws. Ossett drew at home to Mossley, while Brighouse came back from Clitheroe with a point.

New-look Pickering Town lost 4-1 at Workington – Dan Davison got their goal.
