Fox says Selby have dealt with the elephant in the room

Selby Town manager Christian Fox

Christian Fox believes Selby Town have finally dealt with the elephant in the room which has destroyed two Toolstation NCEL Division One promotion bids.

No strength-in-depth has de-railed the club’s hopes two years on the trot, but Fox believes that issue has been sorted as he prepares to take his team to Swallowest, ten months after losing there in a game marred by the referee allowing the home side to excessively time-waste.

“We have only lost one so far, but you look at that game (Nostell) we should have won,” Fox told Non League Yorkshire.

“We should have been four or five nil up at Nostell. You look at the Skegness game and at the time we were disappointed with a point.

“But you look where they are now, they’re clearly going to be up there so on reflection it isn’t a bad result.

“It has been a good start to the season and we just need to keep going and picking up points.

“We have a core of players that have been here for two years and as management team we’re more experienced at this level.

“We also need to stay lucky with injuries. We have been unlucky with injuries in the past two years. We’ve also had silly cautions and silly red cards and hopefully we will have learned from that.

“The strength in depth is another positive as it has been a major problem for us in the past two seasons.

“We have players who can come off the bench and make an impact. Look at the Hall Road game, there were Alex Burton, Danny Snaith and Joe Dale to come on.

“The strength in depth is massively better than last year and without a doubt it is the best group of players I’ve had here.”

Fox has even been able to add the highly-rated Casey Stewart from Tadcaster Albion.

Stewart played for Selby in the early Fox days and he was back to terrorise the Hall Road Rangers defence in the 4-1 win last Saturday.

“He is quality on the ball and he’s at a different level,” he said.

“His touch, his ability to find a pass is phenomenal.

“He’s a talented player and Casey can play at any level and players like him are few and far between at this level.

“He’s a player we have kept tabs on since he left us. It was nice having him back and watching him.

“I think he’s enjoyed it and that’s what he’s got to do.  He’s got to enjoy his football again.”
