A hat-trick from Jay Davis secured a third straight win for promotion-chasing Hemsworth Miners Welfare and a 5-1 success at Athersley Rec.

Hemsworth did not waste time in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division clash as it was 2-0 very quickly.

Steven Jeff crossed for Nash Connolly to slide the ball home from close range to break the deadlock.

For the second goal, Davis sent a nice ball through to Adam Wilson, who shot. His effort was saved, but he was able to pounce on the rebound.

Athersley were given hope five minutes into the second half. Shane Kelsey was effective again for Rec as it was his cross that converted by Lee Garside to reduce the deficit.

But instead of panicking, Hemsworth marched on. Jeff’s free kick was met by Davis’ head to make it three.

With five minutes to go, Davis scored twice to complete his treble. Connolly and him combined for the fourth before a looping header sealed his hat-trick.

Adam Priestley’s equaliser on the hour during his 100th appearance for Garforth Town secured a 1-1 draw with Goole AFC, who had taken the lead through Kieran Mortimer.

Thackley were well-beaten 5-2 by Staveley Miners Welfare. Asa Mitchell and Ben Grech-Brooksbank got Thackley’s goals.
