A rocket of a free kick from man of the match Rob Bordman guided Emley to a 2-1 North West Counties League Cup first round victory over higher league Squires Gate at the Welfare Ground.

After a goal-less first half, Bordman booted the game into life with his low effort after the visitors had failed to clear.

Gate had probably deserved their equaliser when it arrived through James Boyd’s free kick with 11 minutes to go.

The scores were level for literally two minutes as Emley took advantage of a free kick just outside the penalty area. Bordman stepped up and absolutely smashed it into the goalkeeper’s left-hand top corner. A goal fitting to win any game.

Tom Leach and Tawonga Gumboh’s double earned Steeton a straight-forward 3-1 win at Pilkington.

Carlton Pownall, Craig Billington and Josh Dyson scored as Shelley overcame Wythenshawe Town 3-2 at home.

Golcar United lost 5-1 at Ashton Town.
