Marshall’s 1000 chase will continue as Garforth confirm that he will stay

Garforth Town manager Paul Marshall

Paul Marshall’s bid to manage 1000 Non League matches will continue as Garforth Town have confirmed that he will stay in charge of the East Leeds club.

As it is unclear whether his 23 games in the Garforth Town dugout last season officially count, Marshall technically remains on 920 – the number he was on when he replaced Rob Hunter last October.

Given that the 2020/21 campaign is increasingly likely to take the form of a hybrid model consisting of less games and potential geographical restructuring, Marshall may have wait until 2022 to reach the landmark figure.

Following the departure of long-serving captain James Beaston, the news Marshall and his assistants Mark Smitheringale and Michael Reynolds will be staying is positive.

Serial promotion winner Marshall hit the ground running straightaway upon his appointment by leading Garforth on a six-match Toolstation NCEL Premier Division unbeaten run.

By the time the season abruptly ended because of Government restrictions, Garforth were ninth and on course to achieve their best finish since returning to the NCEL in 2014.

Marshall previously won promotions with Goole AFC, Tadcaster Albion and Pickering Town. His greatest achievement is guiding Harrogate Railway to the FA Cup second round in 2002.

  1. Yes of course those games from 2019-20 season should count. Bookings and sendings off still count. Just because the season was ended early, doesn’t mean the games were never played !!
