Shelley to compete in the FA Cup for the first time

Shelley will be in the FA Cup for the first time in September, if the season starts

North West Counties side Shelley will play in the FA Cup for the first time, if the 2020/21 season does kick off.

Shelley won a place after getting drawn out of the ballot, and they join Glasshoughton Welfare, Campion and Hall Road Rangers who were successful out of the local Step 6 clubs.

Entry into the FA Cup is another rung on the ladder for Shelley, who are one of a number of progressive Step 6 clubs around the Yorkshire area.

Shelley, heading into their third season as a North West Counties club, have only ever played in the FA Vase – three times to be precise with last year’s defeat to Handsworth the last of those three fixtures.

The FA hope the extra-preliminary round ties are played on September 1st, with the draws announced on August 18th.

The hoped dates for the FA Vase and Trophy have also been revealed.

Saturday 19th September is the planned weekend for the Vase, with the Trophy marked down for the 26th.

Whilst the Vase and Trophy are prestigious competitions and can bring small amounts of prize money in for clubs, their inclusion in the planned 2020/21 season adds to the potential carnage – bad weather, local lockdowns, teams self-isolating – that could unfold if the campaign does indeed kick off in September.
