Lazenby and Turner hit the bullseye for Garforth in win at Nostell

Nostell Miners Welfare 0-2 Garforth Town

Jack Lazenby scored for Garforth

Second half goals from Jack Lazenby and Lee Turner were the difference as Garforth Town won at new-look Nostell Miners Welfare.

Having previously been a hotbed of disastrous defeats – from a 6-1 embarrassment to a loss when Nostell hadn’t won in the league for four months – this was finally Garforth’s night at Crofton Community Centre.

Just over 60 people braved the horrific weather and watched the first game back at Crofton since March and they saw two sides matching each other in the first half.

The only major moment of excitement came via Garforth’s Helmo Silva. The unmarked winger should have scored at the back-post, but somehow Nostell were able to clear the ball off-the-line.

Lee Turner, a Nostell throwback from the Paul Lines era, scored Garforth’s second goal

The opening goal came straight after the interval with young Lazenby turning home a corner.

By the time Turner scored in the 76th minute, Nostell had made nine changes. The closeness between the sides began to ebb and Garforth took full control.

Turner, a Nostell throwback from the Paul Lines era, capitalised from a Garforth breakaway. Like a rampaging gazelle, Turner raced clear and a nice touch took him past the Nostell goalkeeper who had sprinted out of his penalty area. That left him with an unmissable open goal.

Garforth nearly made the scoreline even greater on several occasions. Turner was denied from point blank range and also went close with a header. Charlie Marshall had a goal ruled out for offside too.

  1. Indeed the Welfare Ground was once a bogey ground for Garforth, but after last night we’re now unbeaten in our last three visits there.
