Two new signings and doubles from Jakub Hebda and stalwart Adam Wilson helped Hemsworth Miners Welfare finally win a league game at the 12th attempt.

Hemsworth won 4-1 at fellow strugglers Athersley Rec – ironically their new manager Shane Kelsey’s old club.

Kelsey signed defender Charlie Barks and Masai Arbouin (Parkgate) ahead of the trip to Athersley and the pair played key roles.

A third signing – goalkeeper Jake Greatorex – was unavailable as he was on the bench for parent club Pontefract Collieries in the huge FA Cup third qualifying round tie against Handsworth.

The Wells settled the nerves early on with a strong start that produced the opener – Wilson guiding in Declan Dawson’s cross.

The only blot on the copybook was Athersley’s equaliser which came in the 55th minute through Scott Hartley.

But Hemsworth refused to be denied.

Wilson restored the lead before Hebda headed home a Jay Davis corner.

Davis set Hebda up with the fourth as well as he supplied the pass that enabled the youngster to carve out his goal.
