Steeton boss slams referee

West Riding County Cup

Steeton manager Roy Mason

Roy Mason slammed referee Jamie Waters over the very controversial penalty decision which sent Steeton out of the West Riding County Cup.

Waters awarded Brighouse Town a 55th minute for ‘a foul’ by defender Alistair Morgan on Alex King.

Shiraz Khan converted the spot kick to secure a 2-1 win and Mason was scathing of the referee.

“We were robbed.” Mason told Non League Yorkshire.

“The only person in the whole ground who thought it was a penalty was the referee.

“It is a foul our way and everyone can see it but him.

“I just don’t know what he has seen and I’m not even sure the incident happened in the box.

“But it is a free kick to us.

“You could tell from the reaction from both teams (that it wasn’t a penalty).

“Not one of their players has appealed and the reaction tells him that he has made a mistake.

“But what can you do?”

Lower league Steeton pushed NPL Division One East side Brighouse all the way and Mason hailed his players.

“I’ve just said to the players that the one thing you ask for as a manager is 100% effort,” he said.

“I thought the lads were magnificent and they gave everything for us tonight and I was proud to be the manager of that bunch in there.

“Against a team who are two leagues above, I think for large periods of the game it was pretty even stevens.

“There wasn’t anything in the game.”
