Departing Agnew says Brid have destiny in own hands

Bridlington Town manager Brett Agnew

Brett Agnew wants to leave Bridlington Town on a high note by steering them to safety.

Brid, tipped by many for relegation back in August, head into final four matches in control of their own destiny.

Agnew announced last week that he was standing down as Brid boss at the end of the season and he feels keeping side up would be a monumental achievement.

“If we stay up it is an absolutely outstanding job,” Agnew told Non League Yorkshire.

“We were overall favourites to go down by a lot of people’s admissions.

“Some didn’t even think we’d win a game.

“It would be achievement for myself, (assistant Joe Lamplough) Lamps and Alex (Davidson) and the players who for some of them it is their first season at this level.

“I think I can walk away with my head held high anyway as I think I have done a good job.

“It is good when you go around the club and not one person has a bad word to say about you.

“It means you have done something right.

“I’ve won a cup, got promoted and fingers crossed we keep them in this league and that would be a massive achievement.

“These last four games are massive games and it is in our hands.

“We play Stockton at the weekend and I want to go there and get a win.

“I know people will say it is a free hit but I’m not about that.

“We have the squad who can give them a game.

“If we don’t, it is still in our hands as we have to play Sheffield and Pickering.”

Agnew will leave Brid at the season’s end after three-and-half-years as player/manager and he believes it was the right moment to quit.

“I feel I have taken the club as far as I can,” he said.

“I know (chairman) Pete (Smurthwaite) doesn’t really to go any higher because he said (going up) would probably cripple the club because of the travelling.

“Pete being on his own, it is going to be difficult.

“There’s no hard-feelings and no animosity between me and Pete because we have always done right by each other and the club.

“Pete’s doing right by the club by not wanting to go any higher.

“I think it is the right time to leave.

“I’ve been here seven years as a player and manager, four years as manager and I feel I have done as much as I can.

“I think they need a fresh face around the place who can work under Pete’s budgets and what he wants to do.”

if a quick return to management is not forthcoming, Agnew won’t be short on offers as a player as he been in exceptional form in the NPL this season.

He also says he has already been offered six opportunities as a player from NPL clubs.

“Me and Joe want a job straightaway and if it was anything around (Humberside) that would be brilliant.

“But we wouldn’t mind travelling a little bit, maybe towards the central belt like Leeds and Sheffield.

“If we don’t get a job straightaway then I’ll go back playing.

“We’ll be still applying for jobs and I’ll be saying that to any manager who takes me on.”
