Mole digs Wakefield out of hole at Hemsworth

Hemsworth Miners Welfare 3-3 Wakefield AFC

Wakefield AFC hero Billy Mole

Billy Mole’s last gasp scorcher rescued a draw for Wakefield AFC who opened their pre-season campaign at a very impressive Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

Wakefield mounted a second half comeback having trailed by two goals at the break.

Hemsworth would retake the lead and were on course for victory until Mole dug them out of a hole with a moment of magic.

Given how dominant Hemsworth were in the first half, it was a fortunate draw.

Hemsworth have the potential to be the neutral’s favourite by being one of the most organised and exciting attacking teams in the NCEL Premier Division this year.

Wakefield were hailed for their possession-based style of play in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League last season but they were given a huge lesson at times as for the majority of the first half they couldn’t get near the ball.

Jay Davis’ long range effort was turned in by Seon Ripley for the opener.

Davis then hit another from distance to double the lead and he also smashed the crossbar with a rocket from inside the penalty area.

Wakefield only came alive when both sides made changes in the second half.

A close range effort from a corner pulled one back and then Mole equalised from the penalty spot.

One of Hemsworth’s trialists converted a penalty to place them back in front.

But there was to be no victory for Hemsworth as Mole popped up.
