Penistone set for exciting few weeks – Lenthall

FA Cup

Penistone Church manager Steve Lenthall

Steve Lenthall says the next few weeks are going to be thrilling adventure for everyone involved with Penistone Church.

Penistone caused one of the biggest upsets of the FA Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday after winning 2-1 at Brighouse Town.

Church are now excitably awaiting the publication of the first qualifying round draw this afternoon, knowing they could be potentially paired with former manager Ian Richards’ Stocksbridge Park Steels.

“If we get a home tie in the first qualifying round you have to expect there will be 500 or 600 there,” Lenthall told Non League Yorkshire.

“The fans are first class and we probably brought 70 to 80 to Brighouse.

“They deserve the run we are on and we are riding the crest of a wave and let’s see where it takes us.

“It could be an exciting few weeks.

“It is massive for us as management, the players, the club and the next few weeks are something we can look forward to as a club.”

The victory at Brighouse was a personal triumph for Lenthall and assistant John Whitehead who until 12 months ago were involved with the club’s reserve side.

Lenthall has been around the club man and boy for 30-plus years ago it was particularly a nice achievement.

“It has got to be one of the best (moments during my time with Penistone),” he said.

“FA Cup is what dreams are made of.

“We’re never going to win it but you have to try and go as far as you can in it and to beat Brighouse is a special moment.”

Away from the FA Cup, Penistone have began the league campaign in nice fettle with three wins in four.

“We started poorly against Handsworth,” he said.

“I didn’t think we started the game well enough but after that we have had a reaction.

“We had them on the training pitch twice in the week after Handsworth and we reacted really well.

“We have won five on the bounce and beaten two of the side you would think would be up there in Golcar and Silsden.”
