New Guiseley striker Shane Smeltz

A New Zealand International who scored in the 2010 World Cup has joined Guiseley who are closing in on the play-offs spots after a stunning 1-0 win over leaders South Shields.

Striker Shane Smeltz has moved from across the world to Leeds for family and work reasons and he has joined the resurgent.

Smeltz scored for New Zealand in their famous draw against then world champions Italy in 2010.

He came on a substitute midway through the second half of the superb victory at Nethermoor.

Lewis Whitham was Guiseley’s hero as he converted a late penalty to place Paul Phillips within four points of the top five.

Phillips has overseen a magnificent turnaround of Guiseley as they were close to the relegation zone when he took over.
