Christian Fox says Selby Town need to respond to the humiliating 7-1 home defeat to fancied Campion in the same manner they did to last year’s 8-1 loss at Hallam.
Although the Robins have made a positive start to the campaign, they find themselves at a similar crossroads and Fox is calling for a strong reaction.
“It has to be up there (with my worst days in management) but I suppose you have to go through these periods to see what type of characters you have in the group,” Fox told Non League Yorkshire.
“I remember last year when we went to Hallam and got battered 8-1 and then went on a 17-game unbeaten run.
“We need that kind of bounce-back and we need to show that kind of character within the group.
“All the lads came together last year.
“We basically need to come together, work harder, get on the training ground and see if we can turn it around.
“I’m sure we can.
“Last year we hit rock-bottom at Hallam and I think we have hit rock-bottom here but we’re not in a relegation battle, we’re ninth so it is not all doom and gloom.
“We are probably where we should be budget-wise.”
Selby caused Campion a few problems in the opening exchanges and Liam Flanagan had a penalty saved.
Tactically Fox had it spot on as their long balls were causing the visitors problems but once as Aiden Day hit a beauty in the 25th minute, heads dropped and the floodgates opened.
Fox said most of Campion’s goals were avoidable.
“I think it was a bit of both (they were really clinical and we were really poor),” he said.
“They must be favourites to be go up I would imagine.
“Obviously 7-1, there is no getting away from that score-line.
“They have been clinical and took all their chances.
“I think the first three goals have come from poor play from ourselves and come out of nowhere in a way.
“To go in at 3-0 down at half-time, the game has gone.
“It was a bad day at the office.
“We started well and in the first 20 minutes we definitely were the better team.
“We got the penalty but we missed it and I think that has maybe affected the lads mentally.
“The goal has come from nothing. A long-throw has gone to the edge of the box and it was a decent finish but I think we can deal with every single goal better.
“From our point of view every goal is poor.
“I think they scored from four crosses in the second half and it is just poor goals.”
