Dave Ricardo has made great inroads towards completing his Selby Town squad ahead of the new Toolstation NCEL Division One campaign.

So far 12 players have committed themselves to playing for the Robins this season – six short of Ricardo’s aim of an 18-man squad.

New faces to the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium include Kingsley Wetherald, Chris Banks, Harry Stanforth, Sam Shipley and Keane Parsons.

Wetherald is an experienced NCEL striker having played for Pontefract Collieries and Glasshoughton Welfare in the last few years.

Defender Banks featured for Tadcaster Albion and Pickering Town last season.

The other three, Stanforth, Shipley and Parsons are all young players based in East Yorkshire. Ricardo and assistant Lee Hastings have picked them up through their expert knowledge of football in the East Riding.

Staying at Selby are Liam Stonehouse, Danny Bunch, Dane Mortimer, Jordan Day, Matty Turnbull, Jack Binns and Tom Chamberlain.

Ricardo told Non League Yorkshire: “It has been hard work and I’ll be glad when the season starts.

“This stage of the season is awful for managers and if I had any hair I would have pulled it out by now because the telephone is always going and other managers are looking at your players.

“I’m pleased to say that the majority of players have stayed with us.

“The players I wanted to get in I have. There are one or two I’m still looking at.”

Ricardo, whose side host Bradford (Park Avenue) on Tuesday night, is yet to sign a goalkeeper.

Selby used 14 goalkeepers – including Ricardo – last season so the position is a troublesome spot for them.
