Those taking advantage of Stocksbridge’s ‘pay what you want day’ got their money’s worth after an almighty contest with Romulus at Bracken Moor.

Chris Hilton promised an “all out attack” performance and it certainly was. Two goals were scored in the opening ten minutes – Ben Walsh gave Romulus the lead before Joe Lumsden equalised.

Barry Fitzharris restored Romulus’ lead, but again the Steels cancelled that out as Scott Ruthven scored.

Stocksbridge held a half-time advantage as Rory Coleman put them ahead for the first and only time in the game.

That looked enough for Stocksbridge as Romulus then had Degville Cross and Fitzharris sent off in separate incidents. However, Luke Keen conjured up an unlikely equaliser. To add to the disbelief, former Harrogate Railway striker Malachi Farquharson seemingly scored the winner for the visitors during injury-time.

It was left to Stocksbridge captain Liam McFadyen to pull his team out of the fire in the dying minutes.

Stocksbridge Park Steels: D Reay, Meade, Tootle, Gregory, McFadyen (captain), M Reay, Hinchliffe, Biggins, Lumsden, Ruthven, Coleman. Subs: Burton, Poulton, Thompson, Laight, Hilton.
