Sam Thornton’s double earned struggling Parkgate a valuable 2-1 victory in the six-pointer at Retford United.

Their first win since the Boxing Day triumph at Garforth Town – six games ago – was not enough to lift them out of the relegation zone as Armthorpe Welfare drew with Staveley.

The game didn’t come to life until the 35th minute when Thornton rounded the goalkeeper to shoot home.

Thornton doubled their lead on the hour mark. Cameron Dear set up a frantic finale with his late header for Retford, but Mark Wilson’s men were unable to score an equaliser.

There’s not just Parkgate and Retford battling for survival, there’s resurgent Barton Town Old Boys, who won 3-2 at Harrogate Railway.

David Brown and player/manager Paul Beesley scored for Railway, who were defeated by Thomas Waudby’s second half winner.

Steve Hopwell hit a late winner for Maltby Main in the 2-1 victory over Albion Sports.
