Campion win in GroundHop opener

Toolstation NCEL Division One

Campion 4-1 Dronfield Town

Campion striker Eli Hey

The 2017 NCEL Easter GroundHop kicked off in style, with Campion running out clear winners against Dronfield Town.

Just under 300 people turned out for the opening fixture of the three day tour which moves onto Garforth Town (11am) today before Harrogate Railway and Knaresborough Town.

The first half was sluggish with little to talk about. With inspiration needed from someone, Dronfield immediately grabbed the attention of the groundhoppers as Daniel Wood superbly lobbed Campion goalkeeper Danny Armitage, planting the ball in the far top corner – an early contender for the best goal of the GroundHop.

That was the spark that was needed. Within a minute, the groundhoppers were treated to more drama. Campion’s lethal star man Eli Hey was chopped down and Jason Davis comfortably converted the spot kick.

Campion wrapped up their win in the final 20 minutes. Former Ossett Town striker Danny Cunningham’s low drive put the Bradford-based side on course.

Ben Kendall struck a fine effort sweetly into the top corner for the third before Hey predictably got his name on the scoresheet with an excellent turn and finish.
