Popular Joe Thornton is one of just four players retained by Handsworth.

Thornton, who can play in almost every position, from striker, left-winger, left-back and even stand-in goalkeeper, remains with the Ambers along with Leon Howarth, Harry Mitchell and Parirs Dixon.

Thornton has now been playing in the semi-professional game for over ten years and his experience will come in handy for Handsworth this season as their squad contains a lot of young players.

He has won promotions with Staveley Miners Welfare and Shaw Lane AFC and had memorable spells with Ossett Albion, Pontefract Collieries and Athersley Rec.

Thornton has played under managers such as Eric Gilchrist, Simon Houghton, Billy Fox and Craig Elliott, as well as Jason Dodsworth.
