Shelley have resigned from the North West Counties, citing a “very challenging and uncertain economic climate”.
Shelley is the first Yorkshire-based Non League club to pull out their league, following Droylsden who quit the NPL because of concerns of a lack of income.
It is shocking news and it under-lines the problems Non League clubs have faced and are facing because of the global pandemic.
A statement said: “As a result of the very challenging and uncertain economic climate caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the club is to revert to all-amateur status.
“Most of the major income streams have dried up, making it impossible to cover the projected operating deficit going forward.
“Shelley CFC will continue to run its other adult teams while the thriving junior section will be maintained.
“The club would like to thank the North West Counties League chairman and secretary for their help and advice over two years of membership and also during recent days.
“The decision to withdraw from the league has certainly not been taken lightly, and the club would like to send best wishes for the future to the many friends made over the last two years.”
The North West Counties League is due to start on October 3rd, but that could be delayed as lockdown measures affect many of their clubs.
Considering Shelley would have had to travel as far as Cumbria in the North West Counties, it could be argued that a more regionalised approach to the league structure this season would have been better for them.
I wonder why they are playing in the North West Counties League? Would there be less travelling for them in the North East area?
