Thompson puts destiny in Kiveton’s own hands

S&HCSL League Cup Round-Up

Alex Thompson’s double has ensured Kiveton Park will go into the final day of GROUP D fixtures with destiny in their own hands.

Chris Nelson’s men are on the brink of causing an upset after Thompson guided them to a sensational 2-1 win over Premier Division outfit Penistone Church reserves

A victory over already-through Wombwell Main on Saturday will guarantee Kiveton a place in the quarter-finals.

Ryan Wingrove was at the forefront of Wombwell’s 5-0 smashing of South Kirkby which secured top spot for Terry Simon’s side.

The young striker scored four times, with ex-Worsbrough Bridge defender Simon Chadburn chipping in with one goal.

Liam Owen’s 21st minute spectacular overhead kick earned 1-0 specialists Dodworth Miners Welfare victory over Oughtibridge War Memorial and a place in the quarter-finals.

Not long after Calan Rollinson had been left grimacing after missing a sitter in the GROUP A clash, close associate Owen pounced with a goal fitting to win any game at any level.

Oughtibridge were desperately unlucky to not claim a point.

The visitors had a series of second half chances, including one right at the death which was only prevented by a match-winning save from Dodworth goalkeeper Josh Herring.

Oughtibridge are still in a very good position to go through as they still have to play Wombwell Town twice and Denaby Main once.

Wombwell and Denaby drew 1-1 in the other Group A fixture.

Jay Flynn’s penalty earned Karl Rose’s Wombwell a point. Najib Arrian scored for Denaby.

Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 remain in second place in GROUP C despite the 2-1 defeat to Swinton Athletic, but Sheffield Town remain on their tail.

Kenan Mckenzie Gray scored for Ecclesfield.

The battle for a quarter-finals place will go down to their two remaining matches against Sheffield, with one win sufficient to see them through.

Sheffield beat South Elmsall Services 2-1 on Saturday.

There were no GROUP B fixtures played at the weekend.
