Worsbrough boss hoping for biggest crowd in years

Worsbrough Bridge manager Luke Forgione

Luke Forgione hopes Worsbrough Bridge’s must-see Friday night treat with Nostell Miners Welfare will attract the biggest crowd in years to Park Road.

The fans have been flocking to see Forgione’s men this season and Worsbrough have an average attendance of 152 – a number far beyond total in recent years.

The highest attendance in recent memory was 321 for the unforgettable 1-0 defeat of Shaw Lane Aquaforce during the Chris Hilton era in September 2013.

Forgione, who played for Worsbrough that season, agrees his club have a chance of breaching that figure.

“You can never tell how many are going to turn up but It has the potential to be a good crowd,” Forgione told Non League Yorkshire.

“We have had over 200 a couple of times this season and because it is the only game on in the area and with it being a local derby, it has the ingredients.

“I think Boothy (Mark Booth), the chairman, will be loving it if we manage to get 350 through the gate.

“Anything from 150+ is a decent crowd at this level but (350) would be unbelievable for us.

“We have the sixth highest attendance average in the league which is unbelievable in some respect because the crowds (at Worsbrough) haven’t been high over a good number of years.

“The lows of having 20 are there.

“It would be amazing (to get 350) because the Shaw Lane game was eight years ago and we’re not known for getting big crowds.

“It would be an achievement to get 350.”

Those who attend the mouth-watering fixture are likely to see goals based on the season so far.

Worsbrough have already scored 30 times and are known for their swash-buckling performances at home which have yielded plenty of goals.

Nostell have hit 35 and are equally fearless.

“It has all the ingredients to be a good game if you look at it on paper,” he said.

“I think we have played six games at home in the league and there has been a total of 32 goals.

“We played Nostell in the Senior Cup the other week and we both played different teams but there was five goals in that game as well.

“If you look at it on paper then you will be probably thinking there will be goals.

“Nostell score goals, we score goals and we both try to play a style of football that is conducive to scoring goals.

“I think it will be a good game for people to come down and watch.”

Luke Danville, left’ has made a big impact at Worsbrough Bridge

Worsbrough go into the cracker in a good vein of form.

Prior to the run of wins, Worsbrough had gone several weeks without a win.

The arrival of serial promotion winner and centre-half Luke Danville ‘on loan’ from Hemsworth Miners Welfare has helped them turn the corner and Forgione has hailed his impact.

“We brought in Danville because we thought he was a player who we thought would benefit us in more ways than one,” he said.

“He only lives five minutes away from the ground.

“With the experience he has, after the conversation with (Shane) Kelsey we were obviously going to take him.

“He’s not the fittest he’s ever been and he knows that as well.

“He has been a great signing and if you can someone like Danville through the door, whether it is four weeks, six weeks or longer.

“We’re only expecting him here for four weeks so we may lose him in a couple of weeks but that was the deal we struck.

“I thought we were in a sticky patch and he became available for four weeks and I thought even if he was with us for just four weeks he may help us win four games.

“He might help the younger lads understand what is required to play as this level through his experience.

“He’s been an important part to the change in form recently.”
