Brave Handsworth bow out of Senior Cup

Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Quarter Finals

Worksop Town 4-2 Handsworth

Handsworth striker Mitch Dunne

Handsworth gave higher league Worksop Town the fright of their lives after Mitch Dunne’s double gave them a commanding 2-0 half-time.

Unfortunately Worksop responded in brutal fashion in the second half to book their place in the semi-finals.

Despite the defeat, Handsworth joint manager Jason Dodsworth said it was a great effort from his and Aiden Spowage’s side.

“The lads gave it their all,” Dodsworth told Non League Yorkshire.

“It was frustrating from our point of view to be 2-0 up and lose the game.

“We didn’t come out for the second half.

“We started slowly and if we had held on for 15 or 20 minutes minute I think we may have got a shock result.

“They scored a goal and listen, they have got quality throughout a great squad.

“They made three changes at half-time and we couldn’t get to grips with it in the second half.

“I was disappointed but we can’t fault the lads for their effort.”

Dunne struck in the 18th minute and on the stroke of half-time to stun the home side.

Three half-time substitutions triggered the Worksop onslaught.

Alex Starcenko scored twice in the opening 15 minutes of the second half to level it up.

Liam Hardy pounced on a spilled free kick to put Worksop ahead before the returning Vaughan Redford put the icing on the cake in the last minute.
