Keightley double helps Penistone progress

Toolstation NCEL League Cup

Garforth Town 1-3 Penistone Church

Penistone Church striker Nathan Keightley

In-form Nathan Keightley scored twice Penistone Church eased into the fourth round of the League Cup with a comfortable win at Garforth Town.

But the victory came at a cost for Penistone as substitute Kieran Ryan was shown a bizarre red card for ‘swearing at the referee’ whilst waiting for his own team to take a free kick deep into second half injury-time,

Ryan says he swore at a Garforth defender who was lined up in the wall.

The striker faces a lengthy ban as he has already been sent off this season unless referee Charles Mulhall, who didn’t have the best night, says he got the decision wrong.

Penistone throughly deserved their win.

Reece High had a shot cleared off-the-line and Wayne Hughes hit the post before Keightley’s lowly placed finish put Church ahead.

Church put the game to bed close on the hour with two quick-fire goals.

A soft penalty award allowed Keightley to score again and then a disputed free kick ended with Tom Brennan blasting home.

Lee Turner pulled one back for Garforth very late on after breaking clear…minutes before Ryan got his names in the headlines.
