Darren Hepworth has stood down as AFC Emley manager

Long-serving AFC Emley manager Darren Hepworth has stood down because of work commitments.

The sad news ends a memorable seven years in charge which have seen Hepworth lead a transformation of the club.

Although the holy grail of promotion was not won, Hepworth has been a driving force in the building of key infrastrure at the Welfare Ground. He has overseen the smooth connection between the club’s under 19s, development team and first team – which has seen many young players given a chance in the NCEL.

He has also ensured the club have a fantastic training base.

The club said that several weeks ago, Hepworth was offered the opportunity to continue next season but has now concluded that his availability to manage the team during the next 12 months will be severely limited.

AFC Emley chairman Nigel Wakefield said: “Darren Hepworth has turned this club from a mid-table also-ran to title challengers while playing great attacking football – resulting in record breaking crowds.”

Mr Wakefield continued: ”It’s testament to his mind set that he has decided to step down rather than trying to do the job with anything less than 100% commitment. He has given his all and we are immensely grateful for what he has achieved during his long stint as our manager. Thank-you Daz.”
