Glasshoughton Welfare pulled off a stunning FA Vase upset at Handsworth, beating their higher league opponents 2-1 at Sandy Lane.

Nathan Perks and Aaron Kitao were the Welfare heroes with two fantastic finishes inside the opening six minutes.

Lee Vigars and Darren Holmes must have been delighted with the shock victory. Holmes, whose last trip to Sandy Lane ended on a sour note, must have been really impressed with his side’s fighting spirit.

Welfare frustrated their hosts and although Leon Howarth set up a grandstand finish, the visitors threw their bodies on the line to hold onto a memorable victory.

On Saturday, Rossington Main lost 4-2 at Rylands – Jordan Buckham and Joshua Gelder scored.

Thackley were undone by Thornaby who scored two late goals to cancel out Ben Grech-Brooksbank’s goal and win 2-1.
