Cooper’s penalty earns Albion victory over Penistone

Albion Sports midfielder Andy Cooper

Andy Cooper’s second half penalty enabled Albion Sports to shock promotion-chasers Penistone Church at Throstle Nest.

Good build-up play saw Danny Facey net after just five minutes for Albion who were the better side early on.

Kieran Ryan hit the crossbar, but Church were unable to equalise before the break.

It was Ryan who levelled five minutes into the second half after great play from Sam Scrivens.

But for all their hard work, it was undone. Charlie Flaherty was catapulted to the ground and Cooper, the former Farsley Celtic title-winning midfield supremo, now back playing at his spiritual home, fired home the spot kick to win it for Albion.

Church pushed hard for an equaliser and bizarrely goalkeeper Chris Snaith hit the post from his own half during the unsuccessful hunt.

Maltby Main remain unbeaten in the league after Johnathan Williams’ jaw-dropping stoppage time penalty saw them stun Yorkshire Amateur by rescuing a 1-1 draw.

It caused the Ammers to drop points for the first time this season. Ross Killock had given the Ammers the lead on the hour.
